Why did my ex do this?

So, we dated for a year and a half. Fell in love. But I have a lot of issues that need to be worked out, I would explain it but its personal. He was there for me all the time to care, help me out when I was sick. Always. This guy even talked about marriage, the future. A long story short, he told me he needed to be alone, be a normal guy because he's depressed, that he doesn't have that "love" feeling anymore. So naturally, I got upset because last valentines day he described the love he felt. It was very very personal, talking about my eyes and his soul and two hearts coming together. He bought me a fricking $200 necklace. Then thursday we had a small fight. and friday he told me this. BUT he said he didnt want to cut me out of his life, that he wanted to be friends. AND that he wanted to do something on monday after cles. ( same college). Okay! so I've been letting him go, because I love him, I want him to be happy. I haven't contacted him at all, and then my phone vibrates. " How you doing?" he texted me. I didnt answer him till I think 8 hours later and said that I was better, you?.....his response... : " im ok, drunk" this guy never drank. I know he's with his buddies, I just told him, " good for you =)" ..his response: Yup . OK? Why tell me this? I mean it honestly doesn't bother me. I'm just wondering, my entire suite is convinced its because he still "loves" me. The relationship just got complicated, as like I said before, I need to get myself straight and happy again before I can firmly hold down a relationship.
